Sahid Umakanta Rout

Shaheed Umakanta Rout, born on 25 May 1977 in Odisha, bravely served in the Mahar Regiment of the Indian Army from 1996 until his martyrdom in Jammu and Kashmir on 4 August 1998. His name is honored on the National War Memorial in New Delhi.

He was the third child of Late Digambar Rout and Smt. Sarala Rout. After schooling in his village, he moved to Bhubaneswar for work before joining the army. He trained in Madhya Pradesh and was posted to conflict-affected Baramulla. His dedication and sacrifice continue to inspire.
